The artwork Self-fashioning Escape Objects focuses on the fantasy and the act of escaping from an oppressive environment. Throughout history people have tried to escape from slavery, fascist regimes, immigration detention centers,
and imprisonment of all kinds. Inspired by her first degree in law and her practice at the felonies’ department of Athens Supreme Court, Maria combines personal testimonies, myths and historical facts in order to create artworks based on fictional escape stories. In this project she attempts to redesign the objects they fashioned themselves attempting to escape, using all available materials and ordinary, everyday items in incredibly innovative ways.
