Short Description:

Maria Papanikolaou creates here seven storytelling images of successful escape attempts by building models at her sculpture workshop based in Athens. She uses plain materials like modeling plaster, balsa wood and fabric to design and construct the props and sceneries for the seven “action scenes” she presents.

Most of the sounds are also designed and recorded by the artist at the Greek island of Aegina.

Maria films at nighttime in order to achieve absolute darkness and uses plain 40 watt lamps and a mini DV camcorder. Her fictional escape sceneries are inspired by actual stories related to the Berlin Wall escape attempts, facts on newspapers, historical events and stories she collected from detainees  at the felonies’ department of Athens Supreme Court, where she worked as a lawyer apprentice.
