Maria Papanikolaou is a visual artist, based in Athens, and creator of jailbreakart.gr. She studied Law at the University of Athens (2000-2005) and sculpture at the Royal Academy of Arts in the Netherlands (2005-2008). In 2011 she completed her graduate studies at the School of Fine Arts οf Athens and her doctoral studies in 2022. In 2015 she received the “Open Call Prize” award at the Biennale of the Moving Image in Frankfurt and in 2018 the ARTWORKS fellowship. Her artistic and academic development have been supported by the Fulbright Foundation (2016-2017), the Foundation for Education and European Culture (2013-2017), the Onassis Foundation (2011-2016), the A.G. Leventis Foundation (2015), the Huygens Scholarship Program (2008) and the State Scholarships Foundation (2003, 2000). He has exhibited in Greece and abroad, such as Athens Adhocracy, Onassis Foundation (2015), Expanded Senses, Museum of Applied Arts Frankfurt (2015), “Afresh”, National Museum of Contemporary Art (Athens, 2014), “Art-ID”, Kunst VLAAI (Amsterdam, 2008), “Bloodless War Game”, Filmhuis Den Haag (The Hague, 2008). Today, she teaches “Artistic and Curatorial Practices” at the postgraduate program of the School of Fine Arts in Athens.
